The Grant Clan Presents: This week in homeschooling...

We took apart a computer, and Moo received her report cards for the first quarter of tutorial.

First, the computer demolition.  I had seen a TED Talk about "The 5 Most Dangerous Things You Should Encourage You Child to Do", and among the five were: play with fire (check), learn to throw a spear (check), drive a car (Moo gets her permit in a month and a half...gulp, check), play with knives (I think this was one...check...our youngest has carried a pocket knife for years now) and let them take apart any and all appliances and mechanical things before you throw them away.  Check!

This was actually a much cooler learning experience than I had first imagined.

They spent a couple hours slowly dissecting and discussing what they were finding.  I'm glad Steve could explain things.  If I had been in charge, there would have been a whole lot of "OH! Look at all the metal and plastic. Ooooo...shiny things... This is where the magic happens.  Lesson over."

Oh Belle.

I highly encourage you to try this at home.  It was a very valuable educational activity.

Now to Moo's report card.  I am proud of her grades, but I am more proud of her character scores and particularly the personal note from her science teacher:

It's been a good week at home.
