Another Year with Gigi

My grandmother has been telling us that she was not going to live another year since she turned 65. I remember when she turned 65, and I was sitting in her gazebo at Fish Lake Beach while she casually mentioned that she probably wouldn't be around next summer. I was 10, and I remember being confused and unhappy about the prospect of losing my Grama. Especially since she was (and is) healthy as a horse, and just about as feisty and busy as a woman more than half her age.

She is now 95 years old. She lives in Texas for most of the year in a retirement community, and regularly serves spaghetti and other Italian dishes to around 150 people every weekend in the Cactus Club. My folks heard from her on New Years Day, and she was still giggling about her New Years Eve exploits...I don't remember a lot of the details, but I do remember that she said that Elvis sang to her and tried to get her to dance with him; and that she got home at about 4 o'clock in the morning. Did I mention that her retirement community is a really happenin' place? Complete with karaoke, gambling, dancing, lots of food and disc jockeys who dress up like Elvis and serenade the elderly women of Victoria Palms. She loves it.

These pictures were taken during her recent December visit. My girls adore their Gigi.

Getting Close to Complete

This is my most recent UFO (unfinished object). It will be a felted bag one day...perhaps by tomorrow. At that time it will shrink to only approximately two thirds of its size, and will really thicken up to a nice solid felt fabric, as opposed to the thinly knitted stockinette stitch that it is made up of right now. This took me only a fraction of the time it would have taken if I hadn't changed the way I "throw" my working yarn. I think all in it took me just under three weeks of consistant but leisurely knitting. I am really happy about that...I like to knit things, but I LOVE to complete things even more!

To Yarn

winter days arrive

cold and snow keep us inside

my yarn keeps me warm

Okay, that is a really BAAAAD haiku. I just wanted to post a funny picture, and felt that I should write something to go with it. Probably should have just posted the picture, huh?
If you can't tell, those are the bottoms of tennis shoes sticking out from the giant ball of red yarn.
